ABOUT US

Project Rozana was launched in 2013 by Hadassah Australia. It was inspired by the remarkable story of survival of a young Palestinian girl, Rozana Abu Ghannam.

OUR AIMS

An Australian-inspired international initiative, raising funds to…

TRAIN

Palestinian health professionals in Israeli hospitals, to return and build community health capacities, particularly identified gaps.

TRANSPORT

for Palestinian patients from checkpoints in Gaza and the West Bank to hospitals in Israel via the celebrated NGO, Road to Recovery.

TREAT

critically-ill Palestinian children in Israeli hospitals when Palestinian Authority funding reaches its limit; and from centres of conflict.

Through its stated Mission, Project Rozana will build bridges to better understanding between Israel and her neighbours.

ROZANA’S BEGINNINGS

Maysa and Rozana – a mother’s love literally crossed borders.

In 2012, four year-old Rozana Salawhi sustained life-threatening injuries when she fell from the ninth floor of the family’s apartment near Ramallah. If not for the quick thinking of her mother, Maysa Abu Ghannam, Rozana would have died. Maysa refused to send her daughter to the local Palestinian hospital. She wanted her treated at Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem. She arranged with the Palestinian and Israeli ambulance services to transfer Rozana at the checkpoint, despite precious minutes lost for the handover.

Later, when asked why she made that fateful decision, Maysa said that she believed that Rozana’s survival was more likely if she was treated in Israel’s healthcare system. It became our defining moment – to create and fund opportunities that would reverse the imbalance between the two systems.

People of all faiths and political allegiances have embraced Project Rozana. They are working hand-in-hand with the medical and administrative leadership of Hadassah Hospital and other Israeli healthcare centres. Palestinian health professionals are now being given the opportunity to train in Israel. Then they return to build the health capacity of their communities. They provide treatment for critically ill and injured Palestinian children, and children from countries of conflict such as Syria and Iraq.

Project Rozana is changing the health paradigm of the Palestinian people. The project owes a debt of gratitude to the Head of the Palestinian Delegation in Australia, Izzat Abdulhadi. It has been fully endorsed by the Palestinian Authority, and has the support of the Israeli Government. It is taking quiet and considered steps toward better health outcomes for the people of Gaza.
